1000 words for weather

How many different words are there for rain? Students at Gearies Primary School have created a multilingual dictionary of weather in the form of six posters that are available for educators to download for free.

In 2022, Artangel created an exhibition at Senate House Library called ‘A Thousand Words for Weather’. Inspired by this exhibition, students at Gearies, in collaboration with the ILCS and local artists, have created their own multilingual, illustrated dictionary of weather in the form of six posters. The posters include words in nine languages including, Bengali, Dutch, English, Hindi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Tamil and Ukrainian. The posters are available to download using the link below.

You can read more about the entire project - including ideas for how to use the posters in a classroom - on this blog. If you use the posters and would like to share how you used them, please get in touch.

The posters are available to download in two A4 formats: A high-quality 300dpi format, which is best for professional printing, and a 72dpi format, which may be more useful for general classroom use. The button below will take you to a Google Drive where you can download either, or both, formats.

The posters were illustrated by Clio Isadora and designed by Calixte Davis. Thank you to everyone who supported this project, in particular the students and teachers at Gearies Primary School and those who kindly offered their time to check translations and provide feedback.
